History

Vienna’s emblematic Hofburg palace was not built at one time. Indeed, the proud landmark represents the evolution of over seven centuries of the history of Austria whose rulers built the Hofburg until it eventually became the imperial residence.

Austria’s rise as a major European power during the Baroque period turned the Hofburg into showcase of the politics, culture and art of world history. Both Maria Theresa and Joseph II lived and worked here. Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt and Strauss all made music here. And under the rule of Emperor Franz Joseph I, the Hofburg attained its present day appearance.

When the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) took place in 1958 at the Hofburg, the choice was made for the institution to take its rightful place as a world leader in the international conference and event industry. In 1969, the overall management of the property was delegated to Wiener Kongresszentrum Hofburg Betriebsgesellschaft m.b.H. And in 2013, the Hofburg Conference Centre commemorated its 55th year of service as an international conference and event centre.
